About Pilates

mat classes

Believe it or not, this unique physical and mental conditioning program favored by professional ballet dancers and top athletes for decades also is ideal for anyone seeking a safe, low-impact workout.

Pilates features a series of controlled movements involving the body and mind, performed on a special exercise apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates. Since workouts are individually tailored, they can be gentle enough for a mature adult with back pain or challenging enough for an elite athlete. The focus is on working a number of muscle grou0ps at once in smooth, continuous movements, creating a sense of length and strength rather than soreness and fatigue. Pilates provides an excellent complement to aerobic activity. The techniques used in Pilates were developed by Joseph Pilates, a German-born gymnast and boxer at a British internment camp during World War I to help patients begin physical rehabilitation as soon after injury as possible. This strong connection between physical therapy and physical fitness continued when he brought his exercise system to New York City in the 1920s , and it is reflected in the Pilates methods used today.
